— mary's stories are inconsistent
no one really knows the exact date freddie came out to her, but she said it happened when the band got under john reid, so it must not be earlier than 1975. freddie and mary stopped living together in 1977. so 1976, at a guess, is the year he came out.
mary have been asked multiple times on how freddie came out to her. here are what she said:
version 1: “I don’t know what sparked the conversation. But I remember standing in the kitchen and he was trying desperately to articulate how he was feeling, and his lifestyle and I just said, so are you telling me you’re gay and he just smiled and ‘we’ll take it as yes, you know, we’ll leave it at that. and that was it, it had been a long road to getting to that point.” [link]
version 2: “I think I realised [he wasn’t straight], well I know I realised when he joined John Reid Enterprises. I really did realise then that – why the relationship had changed. I didn’t know who he was with or who he was seeing, but I certainly had a good idea. But I wasn’t absolutely sure. So I knew this man wasn’t at one with himself over something. I could see he was feeling bad about something. He wasn’t feeling comfortable; avoiding situations, which wasn’t Freddie. It was a relief really, to hear it from him. To have surmised that that was the problem, probably for the last two years of the 6 years we were together. To know that I had more or less guessed right. I enjoyed the fact he was able to be honest and frank with me… he was more relaxed, more happy. I don’t think he ever thought that I would be supportive of him becoming a gay.” [link]
version 2 would oppose version 1 because she said "hear it from him and "to be honest and frank with me"
and do not miss the part where she referred him as "a gay" lmaooo
version 3: “Although I didn’t know what it was I decided to discuss it with Freddie. I told him, ‘Something is going on and I just feel like a noose around your neck. I think it’s time for me to go.’ But he insisted nothing was wrong…Then later he told her he had something important to say. ‘He said, “I think I’m bisexual.” I told him: “I think you’re gay.” And nothing else was said. We just hugged.' [link]
now this is the story that got into the movie. this version opposes her other stories because it's literally the opposite of version 1 where she said he could not bring himself to say it.

— she didn’t fall in love with him until three years later
a lot of people love to defend mary that she fell in love with him before the rise of queen.
in reality, mary stated that she did not fall in love with him until three years, which would be in 1973. aka the time queen had begun to get famous (example being that killer queen was released the following year) not to be cynical... but it looked like she "fell in love" with him when things got bigger for queen.

— mary claimed she knew freddie had hiv in 1984
the test was invented in 1984, yet it was not put into practice until 1985.
according to many, many people close to him, especially phoebe and jim, he had not been tested until 1987.
— mary tried to pull rank on the fans during queen's magic tour in 1986
mary, phoebe, and jim decided to watch queen from the audience instead of backstage, and they chose seats that fans have already paid for (which they were not aware of)
when fans came to claim their seats back, mary blew up to them and referred herself as "freddie mercury's girlfriend" and that she deserved to sit there, not them.
it was incredibly rude of her, especially to freddie's fans and to his boyfriend, jim.

mercury and me, jim hutton - chapter three
— mary's pregnancy around 1987
when mary got pregnant, tabloids ran rumors that freddie was the father. instead of denying it, as freddie asked her to, she chose to stay quiet.
— when jim and freddie briefly fell out
jim and freddie had a brief fell out around 1990 over an argument.
weirdly, mary immediately gave jim a notice to move out and that he could only come in to do gardening between 9AM to 6PM (she was freddie's financial secretary since 1977 btw)
she's so cold to him. and if she really loved freddie, she would've helped jim and freddie to patch things up. but no, she wanted jim away asap. jim felt so unwelcomed in garden lodge that he found another flat to live in, then freddie found out eventually and he got upset with it so he confronted jim about their relationship. freddie said he couldn't even remember what they were fighting about.
jim was not even a bad person, and she knew freddie won't find somebody else anymore in his state, why didn't she encourage jim and freddie to fix their relationship? she just wanted freddie all for herself.
after freddie's death
— mary didn't let jim in the first car
i'll just let jim explain this

mercury and me, jim hutton - chapter eleven
— mary pretended not to hear jim when asked to keep photos of them
when jim asked mary to keep photos of them on jim and freddie's then-nightstand, she pretended not to hear him. so jim asked the next day, and she had a massive strop, which caused jim to lose his temper and:

— mary v.s. jim, phoebe, joe and garden lodge
okay this is the part i'm pretty sure all fans who did a bit of research are aware of but don't understand
"who are joe and phoebe?"
some people don't know these two angels so:
peter "phoebe" freestone - freddie's personal assistant for 12 years
joe fanelli - freddie's ex-turned-chef in garden lodge; he died due to complications from aids not long after freddie's death
freddie, jim, and the two of them lived in garden lodge for 6 years. jim, joe, and phoebe were the ones who nursed freddie until the very, very last second.
i'm gonna be mentioning more people as i go so i should probably introduce them as well
thor arnold - nurse, freddie's american friend
dave clark - mary's boyfriend, during late 1991
now we got some of them covered, we start:
"didn't freddie give the house to mary? how would mary "kick" jim out?"
mary did inherit the house. the problem here, is how she kicked jim and the others out
weeks before freddie died, it was understood that the house will be given to mary. at this point:
freddie promised joe a flatjim was loaning a home in irelandphoebe was also living in the mews
all because they can't bear the thought of living in garden lodge without freddie.
since freddie's assets had to go through probate, the three of them had been given 3 months to leave.

but, she kicked them out against their will before those three months were up.
jim also added that freddie had made mary promise that if he ever wanted to move out, he could take whatever he wanted from garden lodge...

mercury and me, jim hutton - chapter nine
...but mary never kept her promise.
according to phoebe's book:
mary told them get their stuff out, including the gifts they had given freddiefor some reason, she changed her mind and asked them to get three things insteadcalled jim beach to back her up, that way phoebe couldn't challenge herwhen phoebe accidentally left his suitcases, he asked mary and she denied existence of it
according to jim's book:
mary kept jim's car, even though it was a presentwithin hours of them bringing their keys back, the locks were changed. she set up alarms and all, and it made them feel so dirty. like robbers, instead of friends
apparently right after freddie died, mary called up an auction house expert come in to value his stuff and add price tags to everything... it seems bit too early to don't you think.
— the cats
before y'all giggle and say she ate them, i'll just present y'all the facts first
when joe and jim aka the ones who brought the cats to freddie asked mary if they could take one or some of the cats, she refused.
jim and freddie treated their cats like their own children, so it's no question why jim had to go back outside the walls of garden lodge every other night to call for the cats and pet them. until one day they stopped coming for him, only to find out they were given away.
she was also simultaneously fighting a neighbor to get oscar back. freddie knew oscar loved going around the neighborhood (according to phoebe and jim).

so she:
gave the cats away to someone else rather than jim while;fighting a neighbor to get oscar back
this just looked so vindictive of her.
— other things she had done
mary tired to console jim once... she said "he's waiting for you :) :)" which ???? knowing jim was hiv+, that was just one damn rude and cold remark to say
she also disliked joe for some reason, she did not want joe to her christmas dinner.
thor arnold said he had a completely different persona around mary and he would change if she entered earshot.
what phoebe said on his second book:
“From her perception, Freddie’s relationships with men, even including his longer-standing affairs, were impermanent and therefore, although distasteful, unthreatening."
(are you reading what I'm reading omg)
this:

(ding dong she's wrong! he was not with mary til the end! it was jim! jim was literally holding him when he died but say what you want mary!
and?? "i won in the end didn't i?" the audacity of this woman.)
the surviving members stopped talking to mary after freddie's passing, so she got all pissed at queen because apparently they "abandoned her". queen do not owe her shit; roger, deaky, and bri had families of their own, and obviously had a shit ton of other people to keep in touch with.
”[Freddie had] warned me that the house was going to be more of a challenge than I realised. I’m grateful he did because I hit jealousy head on – like a Japanese bullet train. Very painful. I don’t think the remaining members of Queen have ever reconciled themselves to it. I don’t understand it. Because to me it’s bricks and mortar. I try never to be jealous or envy people”
she thinks she made queen jealous that's why they stopped talking to her. i have to laugh!
before y'all come @ me for saying that jim was salty... he was only telling how mary treated him, and he had the right to do so. he did not even say one bad thing about her, i mean look:
weeks before freddie died, jim had a private convo with mary and told her he would always be on her sideduring freddie's funeral, jim held mary's hand all way throughjim brought her flowers on freddie's 1st death anniversary
he was so kind everyone, even to the people who treated him so wrong.
so yeah... these are valid reasons to believe mary austin is one hell of a sketchy woman.
